Tutoring Experience

How I got started with tutoring

I graduated from St Bernard’s College in 2013 with a high 90s ATAR achieved predominately from my performance in my math & science-based subjects. I obtained the following study scores:

  • 50 in Further Maths (50 scaled)
  • 46 in Maths Methods (50.63 scaled)
  • 42 in Physics (44.24 scaled)

During my first year at uni, my old Maths Methods teacher Mr Rice, reached out asking if I'd be interested in tutoring one of his year 11 students. Thinking it would likely be a one off, I said sure!

As it turns out, it was one of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences I’ve had; and also, I was pretty good at it. Based purely on word-of-mouth referrals, that one student turned into a half dozen students the next year, and from that point onwards tutoring has continued to be a part of my life.

Tutoring Experience

Since starting in 2014, I've had the pleasure of tutoring 90+ students from a dozen different local schools such as Strathmore High, St Columba's, Ave Maria, Melbourne High, Penleigh and Essendon Grammar (PEGS) and Haileybury, among others.

Although all of these students have varied in year level and academic ability, I have been told that I have been of significant help and value to them in achieving their desired ATARs and Study Scores.

I have written Further Mathematics Exams for Engage Education Foundation, who are a major provider of Units 3, 4 VCE practice exams across all subjects and run large scale exam preparation lectures and tutorials.

I have also previously worked at Edrolo in the math team, creating content for their online platform and textbooks. Edrolo are a major provider of education resources and are used by over 90% of high schools in Victoria.

I have tutored students from Year 9 to Year 12 in math and physics and I have also tutored first and second year university math subjects.

How I run my 'Study+' sessions

My Study+ classes run for 70 minutes in duration and comprise of 2 main segments:

(1) A lesson or workshop based on developing skills that students can apply in all of their VCE subjects and in life after school. Each week is a unique lesson covering a different topic, and ranging across everything from goal setting, to time management, from motivation to growth mindsets, and everything in between. This typically runs for 15-20 minutes.

(2) The remaining time is allocated towards students working through the work assigned by their schools whether that be homework, practise tests, or other handouts. My team of tutors and myself are available during this time to support students with any questions that they have. Ratios are usually kept at 3:1, and each student can expect to receive around ~15 minutes of 1:1 support if they need it. Where possible, students are also grouped by subject and year level and encouraged to form study groups that they can lean on outside of the regular class time. Typically this part of the class runs for ~50 minutes.

How I run my 1:1 sessions (Discontinued)

I centre my tutoring sessions around the topics being taught in class. I focus on making sure my students have a robust understanding of the underlying concepts that are tested in these subjects. Often this is done by deriving formulas and concepts from first principles. This results in my students feeling well equipped to face the tougher types of questions they are likely to encounter in their SACs and Exams.

Whilst I won’t formally set additional homework on top of work assigned by your school, there is an expectation that students come prepared to every session. Throughout the week students are expected to put aside questions or theory they want support with. This usually includes questions from their textbooks (homework), additional handouts, or previous tests. I am also happy to use part of our session time going over new theory content being taught in class.

Every student is different. This approach allows me to provide targeted support and maximise value for each individual student.
